Hip Replacement
By Todd E. Zeigler, M.D.
Atlanta Orthopedics Orthopedic Surgeon
Hip Replacement is a surgical treatment for severe arthritis of the hip joint. The hip joint is where the top of the thigh bone and the pelvis bone come together. Hip arthritis happens when the the hip joint wears out causing pain and stiffness. If the hip joint is completely worn out, Total Hip Replacement surgery can provide excellent pain relief and allow a return to many activities.
Hip arthritis can come in many forms. Osteoarthritis - or wear and tear arthritis - is often inherited. Hip arthritis can also come after injuries to the hip such as fractures or dislocations. The arthritis usually causes pain in the groin area or inner thigh that is worse with activity or after a prolonged period of sitting or standing.
Total hip replacement can now be done with a minimal incision approach that minimizes surgery time, pain, and recovery time. Patients are up an on their feet again the first day after surgery! During the surgery, the diseased hip is replaced with a new metal ball and plastic and metal socket. With the latest technology in hip replacement implants, an artificial hip can last the rest of your life.
If you think you may have hip arthritis you can call our offices to schedule an appointment to be evaluated to determine what is causing your pain. If you are already considering hip replacement surgery, you can see one of our orthopedic surgeons to discuss the procedure in detail.
