Joint Replacement (or total joint replacement) is a surgical treatment for severe arthritis of a joint. Joints are where our bones come together and they allow us to move. Arthritis happens as a joint wears out causing pain and stiffness. If the joint is completely worn out, Joint Replacement surgery can provide excellent pain relief and allow a return to many activities. The most commonly done Joint Replacement Surgeries are Hip Replacement, Knee Replacement, and Shoulder Replacement.
Arthritis can come in many forms. Osteoarthritis - or wear and tear arthritis - is often inherited. Arthritis can also come after injuries to the joint such as fractures or dislocations. The arthritis usually causes pain that is worse with activity.
Joint replacement can sometimes be done with a minimal incision approach that minimizes surgery time, pain, and recovery time. During the surgery, the diseased joint is typically replaced with a new joint made out of metal and plastic components. With the latest technology in joint replacement implants, an artificial joint can last the rest of your life.
If you think you may have arthritis you can call our offices to schedule an appointment to be evaluated to determine what is causing your pain. If you are already considering Joint Replacement surgery, you can see one of our orthopedic surgeons to discuss the procedure in detail.
